Respecting Each Other Online - Supporting Our School Community

 By Mrs Clifton

Over the past year, there has been a growing national conversation around the impact of mobile phones and social media on young people. For many families, the digital world can feel fast-moving and, at times, difficult to navigate. As parents and carers, you want to ensure your children are safe, informed, and making positive choices online, something we fully recognise and support at The Gregg School.

Alongside academic success, students need the skills and personal qualities to thrive; resilience, empathy, critical thinking, and a strong sense of responsibility. These attributes are essential not only for future careers, but for building meaningful relationships and contributing positively to society.  These values sit at the heart of our Respect Programme. This year, we have placed a particular focus on how respect translates into the digital world. Technology plays a central role in our daily lives, and it is vital that students develop the confidence and understanding to navigate online spaces safely and responsibly.

Supporting Parents and Families
We understand that guiding young people online can feel just as challenging for parents as it is for students. To support you, we have created a series of short, accessible podcast-style recordings.
Each recording lasts 5–10 minutes and offers practical advice on topics such as:

  • Talking with your child about online behaviour
  • Setting up parental controls
  • Managing screen time effectively
  • Understanding online risks
  • Encouraging critical thinking

These resources are designed to provide clear, manageable guidance and reassurance, helping you feel more confident in supporting your child at home.  Links to each episode are avilable in the Parents' section of Firefly.

Creating a safe and respectful online environment is a shared responsibility. By working together, school and home, we can help young people develop the awareness, confidence and values they need to navigate the digital world wisely. We warmly welcome your feedback on this initiative. If you have thoughts or suggestions, please do get in touch; your input will help us continue to shape and improve this support for our students and their families.
