Wellbeing & Pastoral Care

Pastoral, Wellbeing and Support

Student and staff wellbeing is important to us at The Gregg Schools. We have pastoral, wellbeing and student support systems in place should children need it.

Pastoral

The advantage of small class sizes is that our teachers are able to get to know every child in our schools. This consistent awareness by teachers of how children in their classes are performing and behaving is valuable for being able to identify and support pastoral needs.

In The Gregg Prep, pupils are in one main teaching class with a form teacher who gets to know the pupils very well. They are supported by the Head and Deputy Head teachers.

In The Gregg School, students are placed in a tutor group with a specific tutor who moves up through the years with them and therefore gets to know them very well. The tutor is the first person a child or parent can approach with concerns. Heads of Year can also be contacted with concerns. However, students at the school say that they feel like they can approach any teacher if they have concerns as all staff know the children from teaching them in their subject areas.

Wellbeing

Both student and staff wellbeing is important to our schools. We know that when we are happy and comfortable in our environment and with our colleagues and peers, we perform better and can achieve more.

Student wellbeing is supported through:

  • Tutor, teacher and Head of Year support
  • Personal and Social Development lessons from Year 7-11
  • Our DSL (Designated Safeguarding Lead) and Safeguarding trained teacher
  • School Council representation
  • Senior student Mentors for Year 7 students
  • Buddy system for new students
  • Wellbeing co-curricular clubs
  • Wellbeing initiatives in school
  • Support of national awareness days

Staff are supported through:

  • Department meetings
  • Twice weekly in person staff briefings
  • Half termly teaching staff meetings
  • Personal planning time
  • Bi-weekly CPD training
  • INSET day training
  • Wellbeing initiatives
  • Social occasions

Student Support

Our Student Support Department provides additional support to students across the school. We have key support staff linked to each year group within the schools, and staff who work with children and families on an individual basis.

As a mainstream setting, most support is offered within the classroom, supporting teaching and learning, and through contributing to our co-curricular offer. We consider applications from children with additional needs, who we feel are able to access GCSE content within Key Stage 4, however please see our Admissions Policy for further details.

We regularly liaise with key staff such as tutors and subject teachers to ensure student information is shared in a timely way. We also run small group sessions as part of our curriculum offer for students that are unable to access two modern foreign languages in Key Stage 3, or for those who have a reduced number of GCSE options in Key Stage 4. These sessions are subject to consultation.

Individual intervention work is discussed prior to entry as a charged optional extra, with interventions being reviewed on a termly basis. Other specific support, for example provision outlined within Education, Health and Care Plan, would also be discussed prior to a student joining, as per our admissions policy.

Additional information about Student Support for current parents can be found on individual Student Support pages on Firefly. For prospective parents, information can be discussed once you have made an application, by contacting our Registrar.
